Biography
Peter Hayward trained as an accountant and economist part-time while working for the Federal Government (his parents stressed the importance of getting a job straight out of school). After doing a range of technical and legal jobs Peter re-invented himself as a change manager implementing business improvement and total quality management processes. Studying systems theory then followed and then under the mentorship of consultants like Richard Hames and Richard Bawden Peter learned a lot about the human element in both creating and responding to change processes.
2001 saw Peter Hayward in the very first class of the Masters of Strategic Foresight at Swinburne University. Under the tutelage of Richard Slaughter, Peter discovered the field of Futures and Foresight and felt as if he had come home. He now had found a discipline that allowed him to integrate his passions for change management, organisational viability, sustainable futures and cultivating the leadership that makes all that possible. In 2002 he commenced his PhD, examining the development of Foresight in individuals. In 2005 he became the Program Director of the Masters of Strategic Foresight, a role he is still proud to perform.
Peter’s twin goals are the promotion of an individual capacity for foresight in individuals and the utilisation of foresight in organisational contexts. He feels strongly that while humanity does face challenges in the future the resourcefulness, ingenuity and determination of people can create profound change that lead to better futures for all.
When Peter discovered Strategic Foresight in 2001, while it made sense to him, he found the ideas and approaches it was based on were virtually unknown by most people. Also while he could point to a handful of individuals who battled to promote foresight he could identify very few organisations that made foresight accessible and useful to organisations and communities. His hope is that Prospective Services can play a role in the promotion of foresight more generally.
